Industrial chillers are essential pieces of equipment in your facility, providing heat transfer from internal to external environments. In other words, chillers work to move unusable heat from one place to another in your process in order to protect the integrity of equipment, quality of end products, and applications. Let’s talk about two common types of industrial chillers:  water-cooled chillers and air-cooled chillers, both of which are named after the cooling medium they employ.

Air-Cooled Chillers

Industrial air-cooled chillers use the ambient air as the direct cooling medium for the refrigeration circuit, making them more practical for many facilities and processes. This means that they are usually more common in smaller to medium sized applications in locations were ambient extremes are not typical. These chillers are advantageous in that they have simpler maintenance requirements (as they are less-complex systems than water-cooled chillers) and have lower installation costs. Air-cooled chillers are typically smaller than water-cooled chiller,  with many medium sized systems installed outside.

Water-Cooled Chillers

Industrial water-cooled chillers employ water as the cooling medium to remove heat from the refrigerant. The water-cooled condenser is connected to a separate fluid cooler, evaporative cooler or cooling tower installed outside the facility. Keep in mind that the separate cooling system requires further installation, cooling circulation system, which is an added cost and requires additional maintenance. These chillers are also ideal for medium to large processes and come in a variety of sizes. These sizes can range from smaller models to larger models that are capable of cooling facilities like airports!
